तत् पातितशिरोबाहुकबन्धं भीमदर्शनम् ॥
द्विरदं जलसंधस्य रुधिरेणाभ्यषिञ्चत ॥
जलसंधं निहत्याजौ त्वरमाणस् तु सात्वतः ॥
नैषादिं पातयाम् आस गजस्कन्धाद् विशां पते ॥
रुधिरेणावसिक्ताङ्गो जलसंधस्य कुञ्जरः ॥
विलम्बमानम् अवहत् संश्लिष्टं परम् आसनम् ॥
tat pātitaśirobāhukabandhaṃ bhīmadarśanam ||
dviradaṃ jalasaṃdhasya rudhireṇābhyaṣiñcata ||
jalasaṃdhaṃ nihatyājau tvaramāṇas tu sātvataḥ ||
naiṣādiṃ pātayām āsa gajaskandhād viśāṃ pate ||
rudhireṇāvasiktāṅgo jalasaṃdhasya kuñjaraḥ ||
vilambamānam avahat saṃśliṣṭaṃ param āsanam ||
That elephant of Jalasandha's, with head and arms fallen, a headless trunk, dreadful to behold, he drenched in blood. Having slain Jalasandha in that battle, Satvata, hastening, cast down the son of the Nishada, the driver, from the elephant's back, O lord of the people. The elephant of Jalasandha, its body drenched in blood, carried on the dangling body still clinging to its high seat.

The image of a headless trunk, "dreadful to behold," and a blood-drenched elephant bearing along the corpse of its master, is horror crowned with beauty: splendid grandeur turned into a ghastly sight. It is telling that the resplendent Jalasandha ends as a headless remnant. The verse teaches how fragile all earthly splendor is before death: one who shone like a cloud with lightning is in an instant reduced to a headless husk, and the elephant that only just now bore him in glory now drags along his bloodied corpse.
