पराजित्य च संहृष्टः कृतवर्माणम् आहवे ॥

यद् एतन् मेघसंकाशं द्रोणानीकस्य सव्यतः ॥
सुमहत् कुञ्जरानीकं यस्य रुक्मरथो मुखम् ॥

yantāram abravīc chūraḥ śanair yāhīty asaṃbhramam ||
dṛṣṭvā tu tava tat sainyaṃ rathāśvadvipasaṃkulam ||
padātijanasaṃpūrṇam abravīt sārathiṃ punaḥ ||
yad etan meghasaṃkāśaṃ droṇānīkasya savyataḥ ||
sumahat kuñjarānīkaṃ yasya rukmaratho mukham ||
And having conquered Kritavarman in battle, rejoicing, the hero addressed [his] charioteer: "Drive slowly," undisturbed. But seeing that army of yours, swarming with chariots, horses, elephants, filled with foot-soldiers, he said to the charioteer again: "This, that resembles clouds, [to] the left of Drona's array — the vast array of elephants, [of] which Rukmaratha is the vanguard..."

Satyaki bids his charioteer "śanair yāhi… asaṃbhramam," to drive slowly, without haste, in the midst of an immeasurable enemy host: calm in danger is the mark of self-mastery. It is telling that the more fearsome the surroundings, the more even his command. The verse teaches that composure is the highest gathering of self: where others hurry from fear, the self-possessed slows his step, for unhurriedness amid danger is born not of carelessness but of steady firmness of spirit.
