तं द्रोणो द्विपदां श्रेष्ठो नाराचेन समर्पयत् ॥
स तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा प्राविशद् धरणीतलम् ॥
कृष्णसर्पो यथा मुक्तो वल्मीकं नृपसत्तम ॥
तथाभ्यगान् महीं बाणो भित्त्वा कैकेयम् आहवे ॥
सो ऽतिविद्धो महाराज द्रोणेनास्त्रविदा भृशम् ॥
क्रोधेन महताविष्टो व्यावृत्य नयने शुभे ॥
द्रोणं विव्याध सप्तत्या स्वर्णपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः ॥
सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन बाह्वोर् उरसि चार्पयत् ॥
taṃ droṇo dvipadāṃ śreṣṭho nārācena samarpayat ||
sa tasya kavacaṃ bhittvā prāviśad dharaṇītalam ||
kṛṣṇasarpo yathā mukto valmīkaṃ nṛpasattama ||
tathābhyagān mahīṃ bāṇo bhittvā kaikeyam āhave ||
so 'tividdho mahārāja droṇenāstravidā bhṛśam ||
krodhena mahatāviṣṭo vyāvṛtya nayane śubhe ||
droṇaṃ vivyādha saptatyā svarṇapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ ||
sārathiṃ cāsya bhallena bāhvor urasi cārpayat ||
Him Drona, the best of men, overwhelmed with an iron arrow; it, piercing his armor, sank into the earth, like a black serpent released into an anthill, O best of kings — so the arrow, piercing the Kaikeya in battle, went into the ground. He, grievously pierced by Drona, the knower of weapons, O great king, seized by great wrath, his fair eyes rolling, pierced Drona with seventy gold-feathered arrows honed on stone, and struck his charioteer in the arms and chest with a broad-headed arrow.

The arrow enters the earth, "kṛṣṇasarpo yathā... valmīkam" — like a black serpent into its hole: an image of the inescapability of a piercing blow. It is telling that even pierced, Brihatkshatra is not broken but answers with a furious volley. The verse teaches that the noble does not lose heart under a blow but answers with redoubled strength: a wound does not quench his valor but kindles it, and while he breathes, he stands and strikes.
