They cried out to Bhimasena, at the chariot of Dhrishtadyumna, having seen such deeds of Drona, O venerable one: "Surely a great and most arduous austerity has been performed by this brahmin, for thus the valiant one in battle burns down the bulls among kshatriyas. Battle is the dharma of the kshatriya; the brahmin's is the highest austerity. An ascetic and one learned [in the Veda] could burn to ashes with a single glance. Into Drona's weapon, with the touch of fire, the bulls among kshatriyas advanced, many, into that terrible, hard-to-cross [weapon], where they were consumed, O Bharata."

The warriors perceive the source of Drona's power: "brāhmaṇena tapo nūnaṃ caritam" — his martial force is the fruit of brahminical austerity. "Dharmo yuddhaṃ kṣatriyasya brāhmaṇasya paraṃ tapaḥ" — each order has its own path, and what asceticism accumulates burns like fire. It is telling that the teacher's terrible power is traced back to the spiritual force of tapas. The verse teaches that strength born of austerity surpasses the strength of weapons: what asceticism has stored up can incinerate with a mere glance, for spiritual power is prior to bodily power.
