समकम्पन्त पाञ्चाला गावः शीतार्दिता इव ॥
ततो निष्टानको घोरः पाण्डवानाम् अजायत ॥
द्रोणेन वध्यमानेषु सैन्येषु भरतर्षभ ॥
मोहिताः शरवर्षेण भारद्वाजस्य संयुगे ॥
ऊरुग्राहगृहीता हि पाञ्चालानां महारथाः ॥
चेदयश् च महाराज सृञ्जयाः सोमकास् तथा ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त संहृष्टा भारद्वाजं युयुत्सया ॥

samakampanta pāñcālā gāvaḥ śītārditā iva ||
tato niṣṭānako ghoraḥ pāṇḍavānām ajāyata ||
droṇena vadhyamāneṣu sainyeṣu bharatarṣabha ||
mohitāḥ śaravarṣeṇa bhāradvājasya saṃyuge ||
ūrugrāhagṛhītā hi pāñcālānāṃ mahārathāḥ ||
cedayaś ca mahārāja sṛñjayāḥ somakās tathā ||
abhyadravanta saṃhṛṣṭā bhāradvājaṃ yuyutsayā ||
They, being struck by Drona as the great asuras once were by Shakra, trembled — the Panchalas, like cows tormented by cold. Then a terrible cry arose among the Pandavas, O bull among the Bharatas, when their troops were being struck down by Drona. Bewildered by the rain of arrows of the son of Bharadvaja in battle, the great warriors of the Panchalas seemed as if seized by cramp in the thighs. And the Chedis, O great king, the Srinjayas and the Somakas too, rushed forth, roused to spirit, against the son of Bharadvaja, thirsting for battle.

The Panchalas tremble, "gāvaḥ śītārditā iva," like cows in the frost, and "ūrugrāhagṛhītāḥ," as if seized by cramp: terror grips the body itself. And yet others, roused to spirit, advance once more against Drona. It is telling that fear and courage live side by side in the same army. The verse teaches that trial divides men: fear turns some into a trembling herd, while it spurs others to a fresh charge — and one field displays at once both the paralysis of the timid and the ardor of the brave.
