"According to strength, according to zeal, according to valor, the greatly resplendent one, bewildering all beings, Drona destroys our forces." Having heard that word of theirs, Kshatradharman stood firm and with a crescent-headed arrow cut Drona's bow together with its arrow. He, growing yet more inflamed, Drona, crusher of kshatriyas, took up another bow, radiant and swifter still, set upon it a sharp, heavy-striking, flawless, firm arrow, and drawing it to his ear, the mighty teacher loosed it. It, having slain Kshatradharman, entered the earth; he, his heart pierced, fell from his chariot to the ground.

Kshatradharman dares to cut Drona's bow — and is struck down at once: the challenge to the invincible is brief. It is telling that his valor, doomed though it was, is nonetheless recorded. The verse teaches that even a brief moment of courage before the formidable is worthy of remembrance: to cut the bow of Drona himself is a feat, even at the cost of life; and one who falls in such daring is not without glory, for he dared what many did not venture.
