दुर्वारणं दुर्दृशं तिग्ममन्युं; महात्मानं सर्वहरं प्रचेतसम् ॥
दिव्यं चापम् इषुधी चाददानं; हिरण्यवर्माणम् अनन्तवीर्यम् ॥
पिनाकिनं वज्रिणं दीप्तशूलं; परश्वधिं गदिनं स्वायतासिम् ॥
सुभ्रुं जटामण्डलचन्द्रमौलिं; व्याघ्राजिनं परिघं दण्डपाणिम् ॥
शुभाङ्गदं नागयज्ञोपवीतिं; विश्वैर् गणैः शोभितं भूतसंघैः ॥
एकीभूतं तपसां संनिधानं; वयोतिगैः सुष्टुतम् इष्टवाग्भिः ॥

śubhāṅgadaṃ nāgayajñopavītiṃ; viśvair gaṇaiḥ śobhitaṃ bhūtasaṃghaiḥ ||
ekībhūtaṃ tapasāṃ saṃnidhānaṃ; vayotigaiḥ suṣṭutam iṣṭavāgbhiḥ ||
"The unassailable, hard to see, of fierce wrath, the great soul, all-taking [destroyer], the wise; taking up the divine bow and two quivers, golden-armored, of endless valor; bearing the Pinaka [bow], the vajra, a blazing trident, an axe, a mace, a long sword; fair-browed, crowned with a mass of matted locks and the moon, clad in a tiger skin, [wielding] a club, staff in hand; with beautiful armlets, a serpent as sacred thread, adorned by all the ganas, the hosts of spirits; become one, the repository of austerities, praised by those who have transcended age, whose speech is gracious."

The image of Rudra unfolds in its full terrible splendor — weapons, the moon on his brow, the tiger skin, the serpent as sacred thread, hosts of ganas. It is telling how destructive might and ascetic purity are joined: the terrible "all-taking" is also the "repository of austerities." The verse teaches that in the Supreme, terror and holiness, power and asceticism, meet without contradiction; and the form revealed here is a visible word about the One in whom the opposites of the world converge.
