Translation

"The princes, having come out of Hastinapura together, were playing merrily with a ball; and that ball fell into a well as they played, and they could find no way to retrieve it. Then Drona, seeing the princes troubled by this, said with a light, good-natured smile: 'Alas, shame on kshatriya strength, shame on this skill of yours -- you, born in the line of Bharata, who cannot retrieve a ball! Here is a handful of reeds, consecrated by me with a weapon-spell; behold its power, such as no other possesses: I shall pierce the ball with a reed, that reed with another, and that one with yet another; thus, by joining them, I shall retrieve the ball.' The princes saw this with eyes wide in astonishment, and, seeing the ball drawn out, said to the one who had pierced it: 'We salute you, O brahmin; none other possesses this skill; who are you? whom shall we take you to be? what may we do for you?'"
