ततः सहस्रशो राजन् नरा नगरवासिनः ॥
तत्राजग्मुर् बकं द्रष्टुं सस्त्रीवृद्धकुमारकाः ॥
ततस् ते विस्मिताः सर्वे कर्म दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम् ॥
दैवतान्य् अर्चयां चक्रुः सर्व एव विशां पते ॥

Translation
"Then in the thousands, O king, the citizens — with their wives, elders, and children — came there to look at Baka; and all of them, astonished, seeing the superhuman deed, praised the gods."

Here the delivered people offer praise to heaven. It is significant that, not knowing their earthly deliverer, the people turn their gratitude to the gods: the deed is so wondrous that it seems to them the work of higher powers. Here is the true instinct of a grateful heart: behind an unexpected salvation it discerns a hand from above — and it is not mistaken, for Bhima's strength is indeed granted by the gods. Thus the scripture shows that gratitude for deliverance rightly ascends to heaven: the visible agent is hidden, but the source of his power is celestial; and the people, praising the gods, honor the true origin of their salvation.
