tasya rājño ''jñayā devī vasiṣṭham upacakrame ||

atha tasyāṃ samutpanne garbhe sa munisattamaḥ ||
rājñābhivāditas tena jagāma punar āśramam ||
"Then, when that lord-king entered the city, at his command the queen approached Vasishtha; and at the fitting time that maharishi Vasishtha, the rishi of highest portion, united with the queen in a divine manner. When conception had arisen in her, that best of munis, honored by the king, again departed to his hermitage."

Here the niyoga is carried out "in a divine manner," without a trace of passion. The phrase "divyena vidhina" — by divine ordinance — is telling: the union is wrought not by lust but as a sacred duty for the continuation of the line, and the saint departs at once upon conception. Here even a bodily act, free of desire and turned toward dharma, remains pure: the ascetic does not become attached, having fulfilled what was entrusted to him. Thus the text reveals niyoga as a rite of duty, not of pleasure; and Vasishtha, having granted the line its seed, returns without delay to his austerities — a sign of his dispassion.
