दुर्योधन यथा राज्यं त्वम् इदं तात पश्यसि ॥
मम पैतृकम् इत्य् एवं ते ऽपि पश्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥
यदि राज्यं न ते प्राप्ताः पाण्डवेयास् तपस्विनः ॥
कुत एव तवापीदं भारतस्य च कस्य चित् ॥

duryodhana yathā rājyaṃ tvam idaṃ tāta paśyasi ||
mama paitṛkam ity evaṃ te 'pi paśyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ||
yadi rājyaṃ na te prāptāḥ pāṇḍaveyās tapasvinaḥ ||
kuta eva tavāpīdaṃ bhāratasya ca kasya cit ||

Translation
'Duryodhana, just as you, child, see this kingdom as "my father's," so too do the Pandavas see it; if the Pandavas, these ascetics, did not obtain the kingdom, then whence would it be yours, or any other Bharata's?'

Here Bhishma exposes the double standard as falsehood. His argument is significant: the same right of inheritance by which Duryodhana holds his claim belongs equally to the Pandavas—the measure must be one and the same. Here the power of dharma's impartial logic shows itself: what the law grants to one cannot be taken from an equal. Thus the scripture shows the justice of Bhishma's reasoning; and Duryodhana's own claim turns against him.
