त्र्यक्षं चतुर्भुजं श्रुत्वा तथा च समुदाहृतम् ॥
धरण्यां पार्थिवाः सर्वे अभ्यगच्छन् दिदृक्षवः ॥
तान् पूजयित्वा संप्राप्तान् यथार्हं स महीपतिः ॥
एकैकस्य नृपस्याङ्के पुत्रम् आरोपयत् तदा ॥
एवं राजसहस्राणां पृथक्त्वेन यथाक्रमम् ॥
शिशुर् अङ्के समारूढो न तत् प्राप निदर्शनम् ॥
tryakṣaṃ caturbhujaṃ śrutvā tathā ca samudāhṛtam ||
dharaṇyāṃ pārthivāḥ sarve abhyagacchan didṛkṣavaḥ ||
tān pūjayitvā saṃprāptān yathārhaṃ sa mahīpatiḥ ||
ekaikasya nṛpasyāṅke putram āropayat tadā ||
evaṃ rājasahasrāṇāṃ pṛthaktvena yathākramam ||
śiśur aṅke samārūḍho na tat prāpa nidarśanam ||
"Having heard of the "three-eyed, four-armed" one and of what had been proclaimed, all the kings on earth came, wishing to see. Having honored the arrived guests as was fitting, the king then placed his son upon the lap of each king in turn. Thus among thousands of kings, one after another, the child, placed upon their laps, did not obtain that sign."

In vain thousands of kings pass before the child: the sign appears with none of them. Tellingly, among all the rulers of the earth only one will turn out to be the one foretold -- and he is not of their number. The verse teaches that what is preordained cannot be counterfeited nor hastened by sheer numbers: however hard one searches by human effort, it will appear only in its own hour, with the one alone to whom it is destined. So too in higher matters: people strain to guess and arrange, but what is determined from above remains hidden until the One in whom it is to be fulfilled arrives. The passing of thousands does not disclose what the Lord keeps for Himself alone.
