tadetadṛcābhyuktam tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padaṃ sadā paśyanti sūrayaḥ | divīva cakṣurātatam | tadviprāso vipanyavo jāgṛvāṃsaḥ samindhate | viṣṇoryatparamaṃ padam | tadetanniṣkāmasya bhavati tadetanniṣkāmasya bhavati ya evaṃ vedeti mahopaniṣat
This is expressed by a ṛc too: “That highest step of Viṣṇu the wise ever behold — like an eye stretched across heaven. That the inspired singers, praising and wakeful, kindle — that which is the highest step of Viṣṇu.” And this belongs to him who has no desires; this belongs to him who has no desires. Who so knows — such is the great upaniṣad.

The pūrva-tāpanī ends with the same two ṛcs with which the Rāma-tāpanī ends, and it ends with a word absent there.
First the ṛcs. “That highest step of Viṣṇu the wise ever behold — like an eye stretched across heaven”; and: “that the inspired, the praising and the wakeful kindle”.
We examined them at length in the thirty-second and thirty-third paragraphs of the last chapter of the Rāma-tāpanī. The chief thing there lay in two words: paśyanti, “they behold”, and samindhate, “they kindle”.
The abode is not found and not reached — it is kindled, like fire in wood.
And now that for which the paragraph deserves reading to the end.
After everything — after the diagram, after the stopping of fire and the attracting of gods, after the seven worlds and all the sacrifices — it is said: tad etan niṣkāmasya bhavati, and repeated twice.
“This belongs to him who has no desires.”
Niṣkāma — “without desire”. Nine paragraphs in a row enumerated what can be won; and in the last line it is said that the highest falls to the one who wanted none of it.
Here is the measure by which the book checks itself. Nothing enumerated is cancelled or called bad. It is said only to whom the last thing is given.
Here the pūrva-tāpanī ends. The uttara will begin otherwise — with a conversation of the gods with Prajāpati on the syllable Oṁ.
