Abiding in dream, fourfold, Taijasa, Hiraṇyagarbha, four-formed — this is the four-formed sound “u”: for it is in four forms — the gross, the subtle, the seed and the witness — and by excellence and by twoness; for it excels and stands between. And he exalts the succession of knowledge and becomes equal, who so knows.

The second foot and the second sound: “u”.
The explanation is given in two words: utkarṣa — “excellence, elevation”, and ubhayatva — “twoness, standing between”.
The sound “u” stands in the syllable Oṁ in the middle: after “a” and before “m”. Hence it is “between”.
And “excellence” — because dream in this book is not lower than waking but higher: it is subtler.
Note the fruit: utkarṣati jñāna-santatim — “he exalts the succession of knowledge”.
Santati means “continuity, succession, progeny”. That is, the knower does not merely rise himself: he raises the line in which he stands.
We read the same in the fifth paragraph of the fifth Upaniṣad of the pūrva-tāpanī of the Rāma-tāpanī, where the fruit of repetition extended to ten ancestors and ten descendants.
And it is added samānaś ca bhavati — “and becomes equal”. To whom — is not said; by the build of the sentence, to him of whom the exposition speaks.
