ततः तु शक्रः वरुणः कुबेरः साध्याः रुद्राः वसवः च अश्विनौ चtataḥ tu śakraḥ varuṇaḥ kuberaḥ sādhyāḥ rudrāḥ vasavaḥ ca aśvinau cathen Shakra, Varuna, Kubera, the Sadhyas, the Rudras, the Vasus, and both Ashvins,
प्रणेतारं भुवनस्य प्रजापतिं समाजग्मुः तत्र देवाः तथा अन्येpraṇetāraṃ bhuvanasya prajāpatiṃ samājagmuḥ tatra devāḥ tathā anyecame together there to the guide of the world, Prajapati, and other gods as well;
ततः अब्रुवन् लोकगुरुं समेताः भयं नः तीव्रं मानुषाणां विवृद्ध्याtataḥ abruvan lokaguruṃ sametāḥ bhayaṃ naḥ tīvraṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ vivṛddhyāthen the assembled ones said to the teacher of the world: "great is our fear from the multiplying of humans;
तस्मात् भयात् उद्विजन्तः सुखेप्सवः प्रयाम सर्वे शरणं भवन्तम्tasmāt bhayāt udvijantaḥ sukhepsavaḥ prayāma sarve śaraṇaṃ bhavantamtrembling from that fear, desiring peace, we all go for refuge to you";

Here even the gods, in dismay, take refuge in the Highest. It is telling that the celestials, finding no way out, seek Prajapati's protection: even the strongest turn to the supreme guide when in difficulty. Here it is shown that refuge [sharana] is the path of all, and the gods themselves set the example. Thus scripture shows the hierarchy of help; and the gods' anxiety opens the way to the providence of the coming descent.
