ततः तु ते पूर्वजदेववाक्यं श्रुत्वा देवाः यत्र देवाः यजन्तेtataḥ tu te pūrvajadevavākyaṃ śrutvā devāḥ yatra devāḥ yajantethen those gods, having heard the word of the firstborn god [Brahma], [went] to where the gods sacrifice;
समासीनाः ते समेताः महाबलाः भागीरथ्यां ददृशुः पुण्डरीकम्samāsīnāḥ te sametāḥ mahābalāḥ bhāgīrathyāṃ dadṛśuḥ puṇḍarīkamseated together, mighty, they saw a lotus on the Bhagirathi [Ganga];
दृष्ट्वा च तत् विस्मिताः ते बभूवुः तेषाम् इन्द्रः तत्र शूरः जगामdṛṣṭvā ca tat vismitāḥ te babhūvuḥ teṣām indraḥ tatra śūraḥ jagāmahaving seen it, they were amazed; the hero Indra among them went there;

Here a wondrous sign draws Indra toward a mystery. It is telling that the golden lotus on the Ganga, shown to the gods, proves to be the finger of Providence, leading Indra to a foreordained meeting. Here it is shown that the Lord guides even the gods toward His design through wonders. Thus scripture shows the beginning of this marvelous guidance; and the fire-radiant woman is no accident, but a link in the great arrangement.
