तम् अब्रवीद् उग्रधन्वा प्रहस्य; नैवंशीलाः शेषम् इहाप्नुवन्ति ॥
एते ऽप्य् एवं भवितारः पुरस्तात्; तस्माद् एतां दरिम् आविश्य शेध्वम् ॥
शेषो ऽप्य् एवं भविता वो न संशयो; योनिं सर्वे मानुषीम् आविशध्वम् ॥
तत्र यूयं कर्म कृत्वाविषह्यं; बहून् अन्यान् निधनं प्रापयित्वा ॥
आगन्तारः पुनर् एवेन्द्रलोकं; स्वकर्मणा पूर्वजितं महार्हम् ॥
सर्वं मया भाषितम् एतद् एवं; कर्तव्यम् अन्यद् विविधार्थवच् च ॥

ete 'py evaṃ bhavitāraḥ purastāt; tasmād etāṃ darim āviśya śedhvam ||

tatra yūyaṃ karma kṛtvāviṣahyaṃ; bahūn anyān nidhanaṃ prāpayitvā ||
āgantāraḥ punar evendralokaṃ; svakarmaṇā pūrvajitaṃ mahārham ||
sarvaṃ mayā bhāṣitam etad evaṃ; kartavyam anyad vividhārthavac ca ||
Shiva, laughing, said: 'Those of such nature do not attain release here; and these four will likewise be born hereafter. Therefore, entering the cave, remain there; and release will be yours without doubt — all of you enter a human womb. There, having accomplished an irresistible deed, having consigned many others to death, you will come again to the world of Indra, formerly won by your own deeds, most precious. All this, spoken by me, must come to pass exactly so.'

Here the very descent of the Pandavas is foretold as a divine commission. It is telling that the imprisoned Indras are told to be born as men, to accomplish an irresistible deed [the great war], and to return: their earthly life is an appointed mission, not mere punishment. This shows that the Lord turns even punishment into service: the great battle of Kurukshetra is arranged in advance to relieve the earth. The verse reveals that the Pandavas are gods descended with a heavenly commission, and their future is ordained from above.
