Here the divine paternity of the Pandavas is established. It is telling that the former Indras ask to be conceived by Dharma, Vayu, Indra, and the Ashvins: thus Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins are born of gods. This shows that even among men they remain partakers of the divine, descending as they do from the celestials. It is also telling that release is said to be attainable in the human world: birth as a man is no degradation but a gateway to liberation. The verse reveals the pre-ordained paternity of the Pandavas, and a heavenly design clothed in earthly births.
