Vyasa said: 'Having heard this word, the thunder-armed Indra again said this to the best of gods: By my own might I shall give, for the sake of the task, a fifth man among them, begotten by me.'

Here Indra invests his own part in the design. It is telling that he promises to give 'a fifth, begotten by me' [Arjuna]: the king of the gods himself descends in part for the sake of the great task. This shows that Arjuna is a partial descent of Indra, endowed with his valor for the coming ordeal. The verse reveals Arjuna's special origin, and the heavenly plan gains its instrument.
