वैशंपायन उवाच
एवम् उक्तस् तु भगवान् धूमकेतुर् हुताशनः ॥
चिन्तयाम् आस वरुणं लोकपालं दिदृक्षया ॥
आदित्यम् उदके देवं निवसन्तं जलेश्वरम् ॥
स च तच् चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा दर्शयाम् आस पावकम् ॥
तम् अब्रवीद् धूमकेतुः प्रतिपूज्य जलेश्वरम् ॥
चतुर्थं लोकपालानां रक्षितारं महेश्वरम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evam uktas tu bhagavān dhūmaketur hutāśanaḥ ||
cintayām āsa varuṇaṃ lokapālaṃ didṛkṣayā ||
ādityam udake devaṃ nivasantaṃ jaleśvaram ||
sa ca tac cintitaṃ jñātvā darśayām āsa pāvakam ||
tam abravīd dhūmaketuḥ pratipūjya jaleśvaram ||
caturthaṃ lokapālānāṃ rakṣitāraṃ maheśvaram ||
Vaishampayana said: "Thus addressed, the lord Dhumaketu, eater of oblations, thought of Varuna, guardian of the world, wishing to see him — the god, son of Aditi, dwelling in the water, lord of the waters; and he, knowing that thought, appeared before Pavaka; Dhumaketu said to him, having honored the lord of the waters, the fourth of the guardians of the world, the protector, the great lord."

Here the gods assist one another in a righteous undertaking. It is significant that Agni calls upon Varuna, and Varuna appears at once: the gods order their affairs together, obedient to a higher harmony. So too the powers of creation cooperate by the will of Providence. Thus the scripture reveals the concord of the gods; and Agni respectfully asks Varuna for wondrous gifts.
