यत् माम् पृच्छसि राज-इन्द्रyat mām pṛcchasi rāja-indraWhat you ask me, O lord of kings,
हरिश्चन्द्रम् प्रति प्रभोhariścandram prati prabhoabout Harishchandra, O sovereign —
तत् ते अहम् संप्रवक्ष्यामिtat te aham saṃpravakṣyāmithat I shall tell you,
माहात्म्यम् तस्य धीमतःmāhātmyam tasya dhīmataḥthe greatness of that wise one;
सः राजा बलवान् आसीत्saḥ rājā balavān āsītthat king was mighty,
सम्राट् सर्व-मही-क्षिताम्samrāṭ sarva-mahī-kṣitāmsole ruler over all the lords of the earth;
तस्य सर्वे मही-पालाःtasya sarve mahī-pālāḥbefore him all kings
शासन-अवनताः स्थिताःśāsana-avanatāḥ sthitāḥstood, bowed to his command;
तेन एकम् रथम् आस्थायtena ekam ratham āsthāyaby him, having mounted a single chariot,
जैत्रम् हेम-विभूषितम्jaitram hema-vibhūṣitamvictorious, adorned with gold,

Here it is revealed that Harishchandra earned his celestial honor by more than arms alone. It is telling that the narrative, having begun with his conquests, moves on to sacrifice and generosity: conquest was merely the threshold of a righteous deed. Thus the scripture reveals that glory rests not on conquest but on what follows it; and next comes his Rajasuya.
