पिता च त्वा आह कौन्तेयpitā ca tvā āha kaunteyaand your father spoke [to me] of you, O Kaunteya —
पाण्डुः कौरव-नन्दनःpāṇḍuḥ kaurava-nandanaḥPandu, the delight of the Kurus,
हरिश्चन्द्रे श्रियम् दृष्ट्वाhariścandre śriyam dṛṣṭvāhaving beheld King Harishchandra's glory,
नृपतौ जात-विस्मयःnṛpatau jāta-vismayaḥfilled with wonder:
समर्थः असि महीम् जेतुम्samarthaḥ asi mahīm jetum'you are capable of conquering the earth,
भ्रातरः ते वशे स्थिताःbhrātaraḥ te vaśe sthitāḥyour brothers are obedient,
राजसूयम् क्रतु-श्रेष्ठम्rājasūyam kratu-śreṣṭhamthe Rajasuya, the best of sacrifices,
आहरस्व इति भारतāharasva iti bhārataperform it' — [thus he said], O Bharata;
तस्य त्वम् पुरुष-व्याघ्रtasya tvam puruṣa-vyāghrahis, O tiger among men,
संकल्पम् कुरु पाण्डवsaṃkalpam kuru pāṇḍavafulfill the intention, O Pandava;
गन्तारः ते महेन्द्रस्यgantāraḥ te mahendrasyathen you will attain Mahendra,
पूर्वैः सह स-लोकताम्pūrvaiḥ saha sa-lokatāmtogether with your ancestors — a world shared [with him];

Here the deceased father addresses his son with a testament through the sage. It is telling that the good of ancestors is bound to the righteous deed of their descendant: by fulfilling his duty, the son elevates his forebears too. Thus the scripture shows the bond of generations within dharma — the good done by the living reaches even the departed. Thus is Pandu's testament conveyed; and next comes the sage's warning.
