"They found no shelter, and whence could the gods have found peace then, when the sacrifice suddenly scattered and Maheshvara grew angry. From that sound of the bowstring's snap all the worlds were thrown into turmoil, coming under his power, O Partha, and the gods and asuras fell. All the waters were agitated, and the earth trembled, and the mountains split apart, the quarters of the sky and the nagas fell into confusion."

The wrath of Maheshvara shakes creation itself — from a single sound of the bowstring the worlds tremble, gods and asuras collapse. It is significant that even the gods are powerless before his fury: he stands supreme over every hierarchy. The verse teaches that there is a Power before which even the celestials tremble; and the greatness of God shows itself in that creation itself shudders at His wrath — so the wise seek not to oppose Him but to appease Him.
