Having seen the great thunderbolt raised by the king of the gods, the gods then took up their own weapons, each his own: the rod of Time — King Yama, the mace — the lord of wealth [Kubera]; the noose — Varuna, and the discus — likewise Shiva; the blazing herbs — both Ashvins; the bow — Dhatri, the pestle — Jaya; the mountain — the enraged, mighty Tvashtri; the spear — Amsha, the axe — the god of Death; grasping the dreadful mace-bar, Aryaman strode about; and Mitra, taking up the razor-edged discus, stood ready.

Here all the gods come forth with their own dread weapons. Telling is the fact that the whole host of the celestials — Yama, Kubera, Varuna, even Shiva — arrays itself against just two: an unprecedented confrontation. It reveals how great Nara and Narayana must be, that all the gods stand arrayed against them. Thus the text shows the arming of the heavens; and the greatness of the two is measured by the multitude of their opponents.
