एवं त्वयि समाधाय धर्मराजं नरोत्तमम् ॥
अहम् अद्य गमिष्यामि सैन्धवस्य वधाय हि ॥
जयद्रथम् अहं हत्वा ध्रुवम् एष्यामि माधव ॥
धर्मराजं यथा द्रोणो निगृह्णीयाद् रणे बलात् ॥
निगृहीते नरश्रेष्ठे भारद्वाजेन माधव ॥
सैन्धवस्य वधो न स्यान् ममाप्रीतिस् तथा भवेत् ॥
evaṃ tvayi samādhāya dharmarājaṃ narottamam ||
aham adya gamiṣyāmi saindhavasya vadhāya hi ||
jayadratham ahaṃ hatvā dhruvam eṣyāmi mādhava ||
dharmarājaṃ yathā droṇo nigṛhṇīyād raṇe balāt ||
nigṛhīte naraśreṣṭhe bhāradvājena mādhava ||
saindhavasya vadho na syān mamāprītis tathā bhavet ||
'Thus having entrusted the Dharma King, the best of men, to you, I shall now set forth to slay the Sindhu king. Having slain Jayadratha, I shall surely return, O Madhava. But if Drona should seize the Dharma King by force in battle — if the best of men is captured by the son of Bharadvaja, O Madhava — then the slaying of the Sindhu king would be in vain, and my sorrow would then come to be.'

Arjuna foresees a bitter possibility: even having slain Jayadratha, he will be miserable if Yudhishthira is captured meanwhile — 'saindhavasya vadho na syāt, mama aprītiḥ tathā bhavet'. It is significant that for one who loves, victory without the safety of the beloved is no victory. The verse teaches that triumph bought at the price of a dear one's misfortune brings no joy to a noble heart: a goal achieved but stripped of the very reason it was sought turns into grief, for dearer than victory itself are those for whose sake it was pursued.
