वृद्धः तव पितुः सखाvṛddhaḥ tava pituḥ sakhāthe old friend of your father,

Here outward submission is distinguished from devotion of the heart: Bhagadatta bows before the tyrant only in deed, while in heart he is with you. It is telling that in a time of unrighteousness many good men are forced to submit outwardly while keeping their loyalty secret. Scripture thus shows that true devotion lies in the heart, not in a compelled bow; and next come the self-styled 'Vasudevas'.
