तेन रुद्धाः हि राजानःtena ruddhāḥ hi rājānaḥfor by him kings were confined,

Here the full vileness of the tyrant is revealed: he plotted a human sacrifice, turning a sacred rite into an atrocity. It is telling that Jarasandha 'propitiated Mahadeva,' yet turned the power he gained toward murder: a gift from above, put to evil use, is the worst sacrilege. Thus scripture shows the perversion of sacrifice — the slaughter of men in place of service to God; and what follows is a call for deliverance.
