No sooner has the execution been carried out than Yudhishthira orders that the fallen be honored and at once crowns his son. It is telling that the righteous man does not extend enmity to the body of his foe or to his kin: the guilty one has been executed, yet honor is rendered to the dead, and the throne is given to the heir. The verse teaches that judgment and mercy go hand in hand: to punish a crime does not mean to avenge oneself on a family or to desecrate a corpse. Wrongdoing has been stopped, not a family destroyed; and in place of the fallen, arrogant one his son is established -- so that evil might die together with the guilty, while the order of life continues. Thus the retribution of the righteous does not multiply evil but cuts it short and restores harmony.
