The moment the Lord has withdrawn, only two remain on the scene -- Duryodhana and Shakuni. That ominous 'only' is telling: where Krishna was, there was celebration and harmony; the instant he passes from sight, the instigators of the coming calamity step forward. The verse teaches how protective the Lord's presence is, and how vulnerable the season of his absence: in his shelter good ripens, in his remoteness evil raises its head. And the very structure of the narrative offers a lesson: the moment remembrance of God grows faint, the moment he 'departs' from the center, envious scheming finds its hour. The chapter that began with the destruction of the blasphemer ends in the shadow of two new figures -- and so the triumph of the Rajasuya flows into the threshold of the fateful gambling hall.
