विराटम् अन्वयात् तूर्णं धृष्टद्युम्नः प्रतापवान् ॥
धनंजयो यज्ञसेनं महात्मानं महारथः ॥
भीष्मं च धृतराष्ट्रं च भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥
द्रोणं च ससुतं वीरं सहदेवो महारथः ॥
नकुलः सुबलं राजन् सहपुत्रं समन्वयात् ॥
द्रौपदेयाः ससौभद्राः पार्वतीयान् महीपतीन् ॥
अन्वगच्छंस् तथैवान्यान् क्षत्रियान् क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥
एवं संपूजितास् ते वै जग्मुर् विप्राश् च सर्वशः ॥

Virata was escorted at once by the mighty Dhrishtadyumna; the great-souled Yajnasena [Drupada] by Dhananjaya, the great chariot-warrior; Bhishma and Dhritarashtra by the mighty Bhimasena; Drona with his heroic son by Sahadeva, the great chariot-warrior; Nakula escorted Subala together with his son, O king; the sons of Draupadi, together with Saubhadra [Abhimanyu], escorted the mountain kings; and the other kshatriyas were likewise escorted by the bulls among kshatriyas. Thus honored, they departed -- and the brahmins, all of them.

The naming, one by one, of who escorted whom reveals a perfect order: to each guest, his own escort, according to rank. It is telling that among those escorted are also future enemies (Duryodhana is not named here, but Bhishma, Drona, and Shakuni will return to Hastinapura), to whom equal honor is now rendered. The verse teaches that righteous conduct does not divide people into one's own and others in a time of peace: while concord lasts, every guest receives what is due. And this detailed attentiveness, name after name, reveals a harmony soon to be broken; recalling the later discord, the reader sees all the more keenly how fragile peace is and how precious concord is while it lasts.
