तम् अब्रवीद् अश्रुपूर्णः कृष्णसर्प इव श्वसन् ॥
भीमसेनम् इदं वाक्यं प्रम्लानवदनो नृपः ॥
यथा शङ्खस्य निर्घोषः पाञ्चजन्यस्य श्रूयते ॥
प्रेरितो वासुदेवेन संरब्धेन यशस्विना ॥
नूनम् अद्य हतः शेते तव भ्राता धनंजयः ॥
तस्मिन् विनिहते नूनं युध्यते ऽसौ जनार्दनः ॥
यस्य सत्त्ववतो वीर्यम् उपजीवन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥
यं भयेष्व् अभिगच्छन्ति सहस्राक्षम् इवामराः ॥
स शूरः सैन्धवप्रेप्सुर् अन्वयाद् भारतीं चमूम् ॥

bhīmasenam idaṃ vākyaṃ pramlānavadano nṛpaḥ ||
yathā śaṅkhasya nirghoṣaḥ pāñcajanyasya śrūyate ||

nūnam adya hataḥ śete tava bhrātā dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
tasmin vinihate nūnaṃ yudhyate 'sau janārdanaḥ ||
yasya sattvavato vīryam upajīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ ||
yaṃ bhayeṣv abhigacchanti sahasrākṣam ivāmarāḥ ||
sa śūraḥ saindhavaprepsur anvayād bhāratīṃ camūm ||

To him, full of tears, hissing like a black serpent, the king, his face faded, spoke this word to Bhimasena: "As the blast of the conch Panchajanya is heard, driven forth by Vasudeva, enraged and glorious — if that one [Arjuna] is slain, surely Janardana himself is fighting, he by whose valor, the mighty one, the Pandavas live."

Yudhishthira reads a troubling message in the sound of Panchajanya: if Krishna Himself has taken up the conch and the fight, then Arjuna is in the direst peril. It is telling that the Lord is "yasya vīryam upajīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ" — He by whose might the Pandavas live. The verse teaches that devotees live by the Lord's strength, not their own: all their valor rests upon Him, and where He Himself enters the battle, there their fate is decided.
