तस्य वै गमनं विद्मो भीम नावर्तनं पुनः ॥
श्यामो युवा गुडाकेशो दर्शनीयो महाभुजः ॥
व्यूढोरस्को महास्कन्धो मत्तद्विरदविक्रमः ॥
चकोरनेत्रस् ताम्राक्षो द्विषताम् अघवर्धनः ॥
तद् इदं मम भद्रं ते शोकस्थानम् अरिंदम ॥
अर्जुनार्थं महाबाहो सात्वतस्य च कारणात् ॥
वर्धते हविषेवाग्निर् इध्यमानः पुनः पुनः ॥
तस्य लक्ष्म न पश्यामि तेन विन्दामि कश्मलम् ॥
tasya vai gamanaṃ vidmo bhīma nāvartanaṃ punaḥ ||
śyāmo yuvā guḍākeśo darśanīyo mahābhujaḥ ||
vyūḍhorasko mahāskandho mattadviradavikramaḥ ||
cakoranetras tāmrākṣo dviṣatām aghavardhanaḥ ||
tad idaṃ mama bhadraṃ te śokasthānam ariṃdama ||
arjunārthaṃ mahābāho sātvatasya ca kāraṇāt ||
vardhate haviṣevāgnir idhyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ||
tasya lakṣma na paśyāmi tena vindāmi kaśmalam ||
"His departure we know, Bhima, but not his return. Dark-hued, young Gudakesha, fair to see, mighty-armed, broad-chested, mighty-shouldered, with the gait of a rutting elephant, with eyes like the chakora bird, copper-eyed, increaser of woe for foes — this, then, good to you, is my source of grief, O tamer of foes, for Arjuna's sake, mighty-armed one, and for Satvata's sake."

The king lovingly paints Arjuna's likeness — "śyāmo yuvā guḍākeśaḥ": anxiety sharpens tenderness, and one who loves recalls every feature of the beloved. It is telling that fear for a brother pours itself out in a detailed, loving description. The verse teaches that in separation and fear love recalls the image of the beloved down to its smallest feature: the greater the anxiety, the more vividly rises before the inner eye the face of the one for whom the heart aches.
