आरुजन् विरुजन् पार्थो ज्यां विकर्षंश् च पाणिना ॥
सो ऽवकर्षन् विकर्षंश् च सेनाग्रं समलोडयत् ॥
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं पाञ्चालाः सहसोमकाः ॥
पृष्ठतो ऽनुययुः शूरा मघवन्तम् इवामराः ॥
तं ससेना महाराज सोदर्याः पर्यवारयन् ॥
दुःशलश् चित्रसेनश् च कुण्डभेदी विविंशतिः ॥
दुर्मुखो दुःसहश् चैव विकर्णश् च शलस् तथा ॥
विन्दानुविन्दौ सुमुखो दीर्घबाहुः सुदर्शनः ॥

pṛṣṭhato 'nuyayuḥ śūrā maghavantam ivāmarāḥ ||
taṃ sasenā mahārāja sodaryāḥ paryavārayan ||
duḥśalaś citrasenaś ca kuṇḍabhedī viviṃśatiḥ ||
durmukho duḥsahaś caiva vikarṇaś ca śalas tathā ||
vindānuvindau sumukho dīrghabāhuḥ sudarśanaḥ ||
Breaking and crushing, Partha, drawing the bowstring with his hand, pulling back and drawing, threw the vanguard of the army into turmoil. The Panchalas follow Bhima, "as the immortals [follow] Maghavan" -- as the gods follow Indra: valor draws others after it. But against him gathers the host of Dhritarashtra's sons. It is telling that around one who is fearsome, a multitude closes in. The verse teaches that a true leader draws his own after him as the gods follow Indra, and gathers the enemy's whole strength upon himself: where the fearsome one advances, comrades take heart, and the foe assembles in full number.
