तदा विद्वान् पुण्यपापे विधूय निरञ्जनः परमं साम्यम् उपैति ॥

The third verse of the trilogy of the birds — what happens after the meeting of eyes. yadā paśyaḥ paśyate — "when the seer sees" (the doubling of the root √paś — sight at full strength): rukma-varṇaṁ kartāram īśaṁ puruṣam brahma-yonim — "the gold-hued, the Maker, the Lord, the Puruṣa, the womb of Brahman": four titles of the Second Bird, each higher than the last: He creates, He rules, He is a Person, and He is the yoni of Brahman itself: the source from which even the radiance of Brahman comes (Gītā 14.27: brahmaṇo hi pratiṣṭhāham — "I am the basis of Brahman").
tadā vidvān puṇya-pāpe vidhūya — "then the knower, having shaken off good-and-evil": vidhūya — "shaking off", as a bird shakes water from its wings: both weights — merits and sins — fall away: one who has beheld the Maker lives no longer by the bookkeeping of fruits but by His gaze. nirañjanaḥ — "stainless" (without añjana — collyrium, smudge): pure with the purity with which the Witness is pure.
paramaṁ sāmyam upaiti — "he attains the highest likeness": sāmya is sameness of quality, assimilation: the bird that looked at the Bird becomes like Her — free, luminous, no longer eating in bondage. Not identity (the seer does not become the Seen — a meeting does not abolish the two), but neither estrangement: a kinship opened to the utmost nearness. And this is the goal of the whole Muṇḍaka: from "the blind led by the blind" to a gold-radiant likeness to the Lord.
