Glory to us both, the radiance of Brahman to us both! Now let us expound the secret teaching of junction — in five fields: concerning the worlds, the luminaries, knowledge, offspring, and oneself. These are called the great junctions. Concerning the worlds: earth is the preceding form, heaven the following, space the joint, wind the binder. Concerning the luminaries: fire is the preceding, the sun the following, the waters the joint, lightning the binder. Concerning knowledge: the teacher is the preceding, the pupil the following, knowledge the joint, instruction the binder. Concerning offspring: the mother is the preceding, the father the following, the child the joint, procreation the binder. Concerning oneself: the lower jaw is the preceding, the upper the following, speech the joint, the tongue the binder. Such are the great junctions. He who knows these great junctions as thus expounded is joined with offspring, with cattle, with the radiance of Brahman, with abundance of food, and with the heavenly world.

It begins with a prayer for two: saha nau yaśaḥ saha nau brahma-varcasam — "glory to us both, radiance to us both": the teacher prays not for himself but for the pair; knowledge shines only between two poles. And the lesson itself is about the same thing: saṁhitā, "junction". In Vedic grammar sandhi is the fusion of sounds at the seam between words; the Upaniṣad takes this modest term and unfolds it as the structure of everything: wherever two are joined there are four participants: pūrva-rūpa — the preceding, uttara-rūpa — the following, sandhi — the joint, sandhāna — the binder.
Five examples are five storeys of being: the worlds (earth + heaven, joint space, binder wind), the luminaries (fire + sun, joint the waters, binder lightning), knowledge (teacher + pupil, joint knowledge itself, binder pravacana, living instruction!), offspring (mother + father, joint the child, binder conception), and man himself (the jaws, joint speech, binder the tongue). The world is held together not by things but by seams: everything important happens at the joints, and every joint is bound by someone.
For the pupil this exercise is a reversal of sight: to see not objects but junctions; not "the teacher and I" but the living arc of transmission between us. To him who has learned to honour the seams of being, "junction" with every fruit is promised: sandhīyate — "he is joined": one who has known the law of connection becomes himself well connected — with family, plenty, radiance and heaven. Disjunction is poverty; all riches are successful junctions.
