The third vallī is the tale of Bhṛgu, and it is schooling in its purest form: a son comes to his father (upasasāra — "he approached" in the manner of a pupil: even to one's own son knowledge is not handed on outside due order!): adhīhi bhagavo brahma — "teach me, venerable one, Brahman".
Varuṇa's answer is a model of the teacher's art. First, footholds: food, breath, eye, ear, mind, speech: here are your data, your instruments and your evidence at once. Then not an answer but a definition of what is sought: yato vā imāni bhūtāni jāyante yena jātāni jīvanti yat prayanty abhisaṁviśanti — "that from which beings are born, by which they live, into which they pass" — tad vijijñāsasva — "that seek to discern: tad brahma — that is Brahman". The formula of the threefold mark (origin — sustenance — return) will become the classic definition of the Absolute: the Vedānta-sūtra opens with it: janmādy asya yataḥ — "[Brahman is that] from which the birth and the rest of this [world] proceed".
vijijñāsasva is a desiderative: "desire to know": Varuṇa does not give his son an answer — he gives him a thirst and a method: sa tapo 'tapyata — "he kindled austerity": the seeking is enjoined not in books but in one's own burning. A father who refuses to answer is not being cruel but showing the greatest trust: a truth found by one's own tapas will be one's own; a truth handed over ready-made remains another's for ever.
