Oṁ is Brahman. Oṁ is all this. Oṁ is [the sign of] assent: with the words "O proclaim!" they proclaim. With Oṁ they sing the sāmans, with Oṁ they recite the śastras, with Oṁ the adhvaryu makes his answering call, with Oṁ the Brahmā priest gives leave, with Oṁ the agnihotra is permitted. A brāhmaṇa, about to speak, says "Oṁ": "may I attain Brahman" — and he attains Brahman.

A hymn to the syllable Oṁ — from an unexpected, liturgical side. oṁ iti brahma oṁ itīdaṁ sarvam — "Oṁ is Brahman, Oṁ is all this" (the whole formula of the Māṇḍūkya!); but what follows is not metaphysics but living ritual: Oṁ is anukṛti, "assent", the answer and the confirmation: with it one responds to a call, with it the singing of the sāmans begins, with it the adhvaryu takes up the cry, with it the supervising priest permits an action, with it the agnihotra is allowed.
The picture is this: the whole Vedic rite is stitched with a single syllable, as cloth with a thread: Oṁ is the "yes" of all worship: let it be heard, let it be sung, let it be offered. The syllable turns out to be not only the name of the Absolute (the first line) but man's gesture of consent to the Absolute: to utter Oṁ is to say "yes" to being and to God.
And the conclusion concerns all speech: brāhmaṇaḥ pravakṣyann āha brahmopāpnavānīti — "about to speak he says: 'Oṁ — may I attain Brahman'" — brahmaiva upāpnoti — "and he does attain". A word begun with Oṁ itself becomes a road to Brahman: the goal of speech is laid into its first sound. Hence the custom of beginning every reading and every work with the syllable: the beginning hallows the way — as in the Gītā (17.24): "therefore acts of sacrifice, gift and austerity are always begun with the word Oṁ".
