The listing of the nine circles begins, and in each are named four things: the circle's name, who dwells in it, who presides over it, and which mudrā corresponds to it. The first circle is animā-ādi-aṣṭaka, «the eight, aṇimā and the rest», that is, the eight siddhi, the famous powers: to become small, light, large, to reach the distant, and the rest. It matters where they are placed: in the outermost circle, farthest from the center. The powers so often spoken of are placed at the very edge, and one entering passes them first, not last.
This placement is precise and deserves praise. Annapūrṇā (4.1–4.6) devoted a whole chapter to the fact that powers do not bring one closer to the goal; here the same is said without a single word — by a location on a diagram alone. The siddhis are on the enclosure, and one who has stopped at the enclosure has not entered the courtyard.
The circles, moreover, are graded by degree of openness: the first prakaṭa, «manifest», the second gupta, «hidden», the third guptatara, «more hidden», and so on to atirahasya, «utterly secret». A reasonable grading: the outward is visible to all, but the center is not visible to all.
