The fifth circle, and in it Mahālakṣmī. She is placed at the very center of the ninefold: the circles are nine, the fifth is the middle one, and in the middle stands Mahālakṣmī. This is already the fifth place in the book where a name from the Vaishnava register stands where one would not expect it; on the fifth occurrence the coincidence stops being chance and becomes a feature of the book.
The conclusion to be drawn, once more, is not that the book is Vaishnava. The conclusion is more modest and truer: the Goddess this book venerates bears the names Lakṣmī and Mahālakṣmī, and under these names is known the One who is with Him. Śākta worship, taken at its center, turns out to be worship of His consort; and a consort is worshipped together with her spouse, or the worship is incomplete.
This circle's mudrā is called unmādinī, «maddening». A harsh word, and it occurs in descriptions of what love does to a person: the Caitanya-caritāmṛta speaks of states in which the devotee is unmatta, «mad» — and this is not censure, but description. The difference between madness and such a state is one thing: the madman does not remember about whom he is mad, while this one remembers nothing else.
