The fourth part is closed, and at once, without pause, the gods speak again. The word with which they begin deserves notice: sphuṭam, «plainly, distinctly». They give thanks for the clarity — and immediately ask for something else. What exactly, the next line will say; but the very construction of this scene is excellent and deserves attention.
Everything has been set forth — mantras, diagram, seals, rites, four parts — and the listeners, having given thanks, say this is not enough. Not because it was set forth poorly; on the contrary, it was set forth sphuṭam, distinctly. But because a distinct exposition of things does not answer the question of what lies behind them.
This situation is familiar to anyone who has studied something thoroughly. The clearer the structure of a subject becomes, the more insistent grows a question that was not thought of at the start; and this question is usually shorter than everything said before it. This is exactly what makes this book good — that it allows such a question and poses it itself, through the mouths of the listeners. A composition satisfied with itself would have ended at the fourth part; but this one goes further — and its last twenty lines will be unlike everything preceding them.
