Three ailments are listed, with "and others in the middle of the belly" added: gulma, a tumor or hardening in the belly; jalodara, dropsy; pliha, enlargement of the spleen. The list is medical and taken directly from ayurveda; all three names occur in its treatises and denote specific conditions, not abstractions. This promise deserves to be spoken of plainly, avoiding both extremes.
On the one hand, it cannot be waved away. Exercises that move the internal organs and change the breath do indeed act on digestion and on stagnation in the belly; and that this was noticed two thousand years ago does the observers credit. On the other hand, the word nishchayam, "certainly," is superfluous here and harmful. Dropsy can come from the heart and from the liver, and no exercise will cure it; and a man who believes "certainly" will not seek treatment and will die of what he might not have died of.
The Vaishnava side holds a simple rule on matters of healing, and has held it long: one must seek treatment. The Bhagavatam does not condemn physicians, and Dhanvantari, the gods' physician, is named among the incarnations of the Lord; and one who refuses treatment, relying on exercise or on a rite, tests not faith but the patience of those close to him.
