Two promises, and the second deserves attention: prasidanti cha devatah, "and the deities become gracious." The verb prasid is the very one from which prasada, "grace," discussed when reading Devi (21), is formed. Worth noting is that it stands beside svayam eva pravartate, "begins by itself." That is, in one line it is said both that the attainment comes of itself, and that someone becomes gracious.
This combination is constant in such books and, I think, no accident. Where a mechanism is described, one says "it happens by itself"; and as soon as speech turns to what decides, a person who shows favor appears. The Vaishnava side points this out every time. Grace does not belong to a mechanism: a mechanism has no benevolence, it acts the same for whoever pressed it. But where it is said "they became gracious," it is presupposed that they might not have — that is, will is presupposed.
Separately, a word must be said about the first promise: sarva-vighnani nashyanti, "all hindrances perish." The hindrances were listed in the first chapter (1.58–1.61), and there are ten; and there vichara, "examination," was named the remedy against them. Here it is said they perish by themselves. This discrepancy is usual in a compilation; but it is worth noting that the first remedy requires labor, and the second does not — and so the second is always more popular.
