The word sammelaka, "meeting, gathering," is the same melana discussed when reading the fifth line of this chapter; and here it is set at the receiving of the science. That is, the science is received at a meeting; and the prefix sam-, "together, co-," intensifies it: this is a gathering, an assembly, a coming-together. Worth noting is that here the book explains itself. In the fifth line it was said that a meeting is not to be won by practice; here — that at a meeting the science is obtained. The circle closes: the science is given at a meeting, and a meeting is given from a teacher's mouth (2.8).
This whole subject, then, is a subject of people who have come together; and no solitary path is provided for in it. The Vaishnava side stands on this as firmly as on anything else. Sadhu-sanga, "association with those walking," is named by her the first cause of everything (Bhagavatam 1.2.16); and the Chaitanya-charitamrita says that "even a moment's association with a devotee" is the beginning of everything.
This coincidence deserves note. A book that spent three chapters teaching solitary bodily work, upon reaching the question of receiving, says: at a gathering. To the solitary it promises nothing: na kinchit siddhi-bhag bhavet, "nothing does he become partaker of."
