The charting of the six circles begins, and let it be spoken of all at once, so as not to repeat at each. The six are: muladhara — at the base; svadhishthana — above it; manipura — at the navel; anahata — at the heart; vishuddha — at the throat; ajna — between the brows. The seventh, thousand-petaled, stands above them and does not enter the count of six.
This scheme is universal in later books and has even entered European usage; and so it should be spoken of plainly, as was said when reading Bhavana (p13). This is a map of sensations, not a description of internal organs. There are no circles or petals in the body; and the places named by them are places where, in concentration, a response is felt. Hence there are six of them, and hence they are arranged along the central line — where anything at all is generally felt.
This map deserves exactly as much trust as the concordant testimony of many people about their own sensations deserves. No more, no less. The Vaishnava side does not use this scheme and builds no doctrine on it, but neither does she war against it. Her argument here is the one already made: nothing about God follows from sensations, for sensations are ours, and He is not ours.
