Here is the position for whose sake this whole chapter is worth reading, and it is unexpected in a book on yoga: abhyasa-matra-niratah na vindante ha melanam — "those devoted to practice alone do not attain the meeting." Let us take the words apart. Abhyasa — "practice, habit," discussed when reading the eighth line of the first chapter. Melana — "meeting, union," from mil, "to come together"; discussed when reading the sixty-fifth line.
And it is said: practice alone is not enough. This position, in a book that spent eighty-six verses expounding practices, is, in essence, an admission of the limit of its own method. However much one repeats, there will be no meeting — it is not produced by repetition.
The Vaishnava side says the very same thing, in almost the same words, and this is one of her central positions. Service according to rules — vaidhi — brings a man into order, but does not give taste; taste is given, and not for length of service. The Bhagavatam says: "He is not attained by reasoning, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing; he whom He chooses, to him alone is He revealed" (Kathaka 1.2.23, repeated in Mundaka 3.2.3).
This coincidence deserves special note. A book about bodily techniques, reaching the substance of the matter, has said: practice will not do it, a meeting is needed; and the following lines will explain where a meeting comes from.
