दुर्योधन उवाच
अद्य तान् कुशलैर् विप्रैः सुकृतैर् आप्तकारिभिः ॥
कुन्तीपुत्रान् भेदयामो माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥
अथ वा द्रुपदो राजा महद्भिर् वित्तसंचयैः ॥
पुत्राश् चास्य प्रलोभ्यन्ताम् अमात्याश् चैव सर्वशः ॥
duryodhana uvāca
adya tān kuśalair vipraiḥ sukṛtair āptakāribhiḥ ||
kuntīputrān bhedayāmo mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ||
atha vā drupado rājā mahadbhir vittasaṃcayaiḥ ||
putrāś cāsya pralobhyantām amātyāś caiva sarvaśaḥ ||
Duryodhana said: "Now, through skilled brahmins, trustworthy, faithfully serving, let us set Kunti's sons at odds, and the two sons of Madri, the Pandavas; or else let King Drupada, and his sons, and his counselors, be tempted in every way with great heaps of wealth."

Here malice's first thought is discord and bribery. It is telling that Duryodhana begins with "bheda" — sowing division — and with bribes: treachery seeks to break unity and buy conscience. Here it becomes clear that dividing those who love one another and corrupting them with wealth is the weapon of untruth. Thus the text reveals evil's first ploys; and a sacred brotherhood is chosen as the target.
