वैशंपायन उवाच
तेषां श्रुत्वा महाबाहुर् वार्यमाणस् तपोधनैः ॥
जगाम तानि तीर्थानि द्रष्टुं पुरुषसत्तमः ॥
ततः सौभद्रम् आसाद्य महर्षेस् तीर्थम् उत्तमम् ॥
विगाह्य तरसा शूरः स्नानं चक्रे परंतपः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
teṣāṃ śrutvā mahābāhur vāryamāṇas tapodhanaiḥ ||
jagāma tāni tīrthāni draṣṭuṃ puruṣasattamaḥ ||
tataḥ saubhadram āsādya maharṣes tīrtham uttamam ||
vigāhya tarasā śūraḥ snānaṃ cakre paraṃtapaḥ ||
"Having heard them, the mighty-armed one, though held back by the ascetics, went to those tirthas to see them, the best of men; then, having reached Saubhadra, the excellent tirtha of the great sage, having swiftly plunged in, the hero, chastiser of foes, performed his ablution."

Here the hero fearlessly goes where others flee. It is significant that Arjuna, though 'held back,' still enters the dangerous tirtha: the valorous does not shrink from a danger threatening a holy place. The defender goes to meet calamity in order to deliver from it. Thus the scripture reveals Arjuna's fearlessness; and he himself becomes bait for the predator, so as to remove it.
