एवं तौ समनुज्ञातौ पावकेन महात्मना ॥
अर्जुनो वासुदेवश् च दानवश् च मयस् तथा ॥
परिक्रम्य ततः सर्वे त्रयो ऽपि भरतर्षभ ॥
रमणीये नदीकूले सहिताः समुपाविशन् ॥

Translation
Vaishampayana said: "Thus the two, given leave by the great-souled Pavaka — Arjuna, and Vasudeva, and the danava Maya likewise — having circled him reverently, then all three, O bull of the Bharatas, sat down together on the pleasant bank of the river."

Here the fearsome tale of Khandava — and the whole of the Adi-parva — closes with an image of peace. It is significant that beside Nara and Narayana sits the danava Maya, the one whom Arjuna saved, granting him refuge amid the fire: the one saved by grace remains close to his saviours and soon repays them by raising a wondrous palace. Thus is revealed the fruit of sharanagati — even a foe who takes refuge finds a place near the Lord. Thus after the purifying fire comes rest; and with this the Adi-parva concludes — the first book of the Mahabharata, from the beginning of the tradition's telling of creation to the establishment of the Pandavas and their divine bond with Krishna.
