अर्जुन उवाच
नैव वाचा व्यवसितं भीम विज्ञायते सताम् ॥
इतश् चतुर्दशे वर्षे द्रष्टारो यद् भविष्यति ॥
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश् च दुरात्मनः ॥
दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥
असूयितारं वक्तारं प्रस्रष्टारं दुरात्मनाम् ॥
भीमसेन नियोगात् ते हन्ताहं कर्णम् आहवे ॥

naiva vācā vyavasitaṃ bhīma vijñāyate satām ||
itaś caturdaśe varṣe draṣṭāro yad bhaviṣyati ||
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneś ca durātmanaḥ ||
duḥśāsanacaturthānāṃ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam ||
asūyitāraṃ vaktāraṃ prasraṣṭāraṃ durātmanām ||
bhīmasena niyogāt te hantāhaṃ karṇam āhave ||
[Arjuna:] 'The resolve of the good is known not by word, O Bhima; in the fourteenth year from now the onlookers will see what will be. The blood of Duryodhana, Karna, the wicked-hearted Shakuni, and the fourth, Duhshasana, the earth will drink. By your command, Bhimasena, I will slay in battle Karna — this envious, foul-mouthed abettor of the wicked.'

Arjuna balances his brother's ardor with sobriety: 'the resolve of the good is known not by word' — true firmness is proven by deed and by time, not by a loud oath. And yet he does not renounce the vow but affirms it, naming its term — the fourteenth year: retribution has its own hour, and until then it ripens in silence. It is significant that he too takes up the oath 'by the command' of Bhima, showing the brothers' accord: their retribution is one, as the honor trampled upon is one. The verse teaches that true resolve is sparing of words and patient; that a vow entrusted to time is firmer than one squandered in speech; and that brothers who share the burden of justice act not apart but as a single will of dharma.
