स्वस्तस्मै वै उदानात्मने नमो नमः

Translation
Oṁ, obeisance to Him whose essence is udāna. Oṁ, that is the truth; earth, air, heaven. To Him whose essence is udāna, obeisance and obeisance.

The fourth breath: udāna — "the ascending". It is credited with speech, and also with that movement by which, at the hour of death, the life-force rises upward and draws out the soul.
Hence the invocation to udāna in such a litany stands apart: the bow is made both to the power that utters these very words and to the one that will lead in the last hour.
The Upaniṣads speak of this in detail: at the departure the prāṇas gather to the soul, and the knower goes out by the upward path. Here the same is only named in an obeisance.
Note that in this list no force is called hostile or unclean. The breath that will lead out of the body is honoured equally with that which sustains life.
Vyāna remains — the fifth, spread through the whole body; and after udāna will sound the name "the son of Devakī".
